Um 2014 fantástico

O escritor brasileiro Luís Fernando Veríssimo percebeu que se interessava mais por letras do que por números quando, em criança, o professor de matemática lhe colocou aqueles problemas do costume. “Um comboio parte do ponto A às 8h00 e viaja a uma velocidade média de 100 km/h. Outro comboio parte do ponto B duas horas mais tarde e depois segue a 80 km/h. Determine a que horas vão os comboios encontrar-se no ponto C, sabendo que, etc.” Em vez de calcular a resposta, Veríssimo punha-se a imaginar quem seriam os passageiros dos comboios, por que razão iriam para o ponto C àquela hora da manhã, ou quem os esperaria lá. ()

Da autoria de Asimov:

Há aquela história na qual o presidente Reagan começa a ficar preocupado com o orçamento de Estado e, ao tentar resolvê-lo, pergunta a um físico: <<Quantos são dois e dois?>> Imediatamente, o físico responde: <<Quatro, Senhor Presidente>>

Reagan reflectiu uns instantes sobre aquilo, contando pelos dedos, e não ficou satisfeito. Portanto, foi perguntar a um especialista em estatística: <<Quantos são dois e dois?>> O especialista espondeu, depois de pensar um bocado: <<A última amostragem realizada entre pessoas com a quarta classe, Senhor Presidente, revela um naipe de respostas cuja média se aproxima bastante de quatro.>>

Mas era o orçamento que esteva em questão, portanto Reagan achou que devia insistir no problema até ao fim. Portanto, foi perguntar a um economista: <<Quantos são dois e dois?>> O economista puxou as persianas para baixo, olhou rapidamente para um lado e para o outro e, depois sussurrou: <<Quanto é que gostava que fosse a resposta, Senhor Presidente?>>.

Nanotecnologia

A 29 de dezembro de 1959 Richard Feynman foi o orador da palestra intitulada “There’s Plenty of Room at the Bottom”:

I would like to describe a field, in which little has been done, but in which an enormous amount can be done in principle. This field is not quite the same as the others in that it will not tell us much of fundamental physics (in the sense of, “What are the strange particles?”) but it is more like solid-state physics in the sense that it might tell us much of great interest about the strange phenomena that occur in complex situations. Furthermore, a point that is most important is that it would have an enormous number of technical applications.

What I want to talk about is the problem of manipulating and controlling things on a small scale.

As soon as I mention this, people tell me about miniaturization, and how far it has progressed today. They tell me about electric motors that are the size of the nail on your small finger. And there is a device on the market, they tell me, by which you can write the Lord’s Prayer on the head of a pin. But that’s nothing; that’s the most primitive, halting step in the direction I intend to discuss. It is a staggeringly small world that is below. In the year 2000, when they look back at this age, they will wonder why it was not until the year 1960 that anybody began seriously to move in this direction.

Em Portugal assinala-se a 24 de novembro o Dia Nacional da Cultura Científica, o que permite dinamizar atividades para desmitificar o trabalho efetuado pelos investigadores, chamar a atenção para a importância do conhecimento científico e da tecnologia na nossa vida diária e promover o ensino das Ciências.
